Priority Number One
Providing a safe workplace is priority number one at Tilcon. The safety, health, and well-being of our employees, customers, vendors and all those that come in contact with our work are our first consideration. They remains a primary cornerstone of our overall business strategy.
Our goal is ‘Safe Production, All Day, Every Day’. Superior efforts by our management, safety teams and employees at Tilcon have produced a world class safety record. Our employees are recognized for their exceptional safety record and Tilcon facilities proudly display signs noting days worked without injuries.
Our Safety Professionals
Many of our safety professionals and Safety Management staff are involved in local, state, or national safety and health organizations and committees and have been recognized for their work.
Go to our Awards section for more details of Safety awards we have won.
Best Practice
The sharing of best practices is a key component that enables us to maintain our outstanding safety record. Tilcon is a key participant in the Oldcastle Materials Safety Best Practice Group, organized by our parent company. We recognize that sharing successes, failures, and experiences capitalizes on the synergies between companies to benefit the whole organization. As we benchmark each other and our industry peers, we have found that Tilcon and Oldcastle Materials compare very favorably and are often considered industry leaders.
Training / Equipment / Incentives
Training is key to our Safety initiatives. We recognize that we have a responsibility to provide all employees with a place of employment that is free from all recognizable hazards that have the potential to cause serious harm. Making employees aware of these hazards through training, and providing protection from them, is vital.
All Tilcon Operations employees receive comprehensive Safety training when they join us and continuously throughout their career with us. Training includes our own Safety training, MHSA and OHSA courses. We also work with vendors of our heavy equipment and local Unions who run Safety training courses for our employees.
Operations employees are provided with all necessary safety equipment free of charge. This includes eye and face protection, hearing protection, respiratory protection, foot protection and fall protection as necessary.
One of the key measures of the effectiveness of our Safety operations is the number of years a plant or an individual has worked without ‘Lost Time Injuries’ or ‘Recordable Injuries’. We offer incentives to staff for every year they work without Lost Time Injuries or Recordable Injuries.
Safety and Hazard Awareness Training Center
At Tilcon we believe that innovative solutions are vital if you want to get the Safety message across to employees. That is why we set up an outdoor, on-site Safety and Hazard Awareness Training Center at our Mount Hope facility in November 2003. The Center is used to train all Tilcon operations personnel by simulating typical hazards and violations found in quarry, asphalt and recycling facilities. Training stations cover hazards such as fall protection, confined space, trenching, fire extinguisher use, traffic patterns, hoisting and crusher jams. The Center also features MSHA, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and Tilcon safety information.
