Tilcon was awarded this prestigious paving project in July 2005. It consisted of rehabilitating the South Tube of the Lincoln Tunnel which runs under the Hudson River from New Jersey to New York. In a tunnel which carries approximately 150,000 vehicles a day, minimizing traffic disruption was a key feature our work.
Tilcon, working for the Port Authority of NY and NJ, carried out the work over the course of four weekends in October and November 2005, working at night to minimize traffic disruption.
The job consisted of removing 21,000 square yards of existing asphalt pavement, laying 3,500 tons of Mix PA 5, PG 76-22 modified asphalt, 21,000 square yards of 76-22 modified asphalt bond coat, line stripping and pavement reflectors.
Communication and cooperation between Tilcon's asphalt plants, paving crew and the subcontractors was particularly important on this job as the tunnel had to be clear for traffic at the scheduled time each day.
